Survival Gear
When one first hears the term survival gear, it conjures up images of single engine plane wrecks in the mountains, hikers lost in the wilderness or desert, even people who woke up one morning to find themselves mysteriously lost in the middle of the rain forest. What doesn’t always spring immediately to mind is the fact that disasters can strike anywhere at any time and your family may be depending upon your preparations to survive whatever emergency situation it has found itself in.
Snowstorms, flooding, tornados, even terrorist attacks or power outages can leave you and your family in an emergency situation without even leaving the house. Roadside emergencies may leave you camping in the elements unexpectedly. (And if Facebook is to be believed, there’s a coming zombie apocalypse.) It just makes good sense to have survival gear on hand for that moment when the unexpected happens.
In a world where uncertainty looms around every corner, accidents and disasters can happen at any time. Even economic crashes or the loss of a job could result in your family needing to rely on the supplies you have put away in your survival gear. With that said, what should your home and vehicle survival kits include?
For home and vehicle survival kits, pre-packaged, non-perishable food and drink items are wonderful additions to your emergency supplies. If these food and drink items include things that need to be cooked, be sure to include a method of cooking, such as a camp grill and fuel, as well as tools to open food packaging, such as a can opener and a pair of scissors. Regularly keep track of the expiration dates on food and drink items and replace these items as necessary.
In addition to food and drink, any prescription medications that you take regularly should be included in your emergency kit. This addition can make the difference between surviving an emergency and dying before being rescued. Like your food and drink supplies, you should keep track of expiration dates for your medications and ensure that a list of current medications, medical history and allergies for each member of your household is included in your emergency gear.
Emergency gear for your home and automobile require specific additions in each case that useful for the situations you are likely to face in that environment. For your home emergency kit, include tools to ensure the safety of your home in the event of an emergency, such as gas and water line shut-off tools. For your automotive emergency kit, include items such as road flares and a pop up tent to ensure that you can safely survive any situation you may find yourself in out on the road. Both kits should include the basic emergency equipment and a first aid kit to ensure the ability to handle any injuries that might have been sustained during the emergency situation.
With properly chosen survival gear, you and your family can survive virtually any emergency situation, whether at home or on the road. By using a combination of pre-packaged survival kits and personalized additions to your own survival gear, you can create a customized survival package that ensures your family’s safety through storm, flood, financial crisis or any other catastrophe.
